West Virginia Wesleyan Ends 35-Game Losing Streak in Mike Kellar’s Coaching Debut
BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — West Virginia Wesleyan ended a 35-game football losing streak Saturday, Aug. 29, with a 31-13 victory over Post University, giving Mike Kellar a win in his West Virginia Wesleyan coaching debut.
The victory at Cebe Ross Field was the Bobcats’ first since a 31-30 win over Alderson Broaddus on Oct. 22, 2022. Wesleyan lost its final three games that season before enduring three consecutive winless seasons from 2023 through 2025.
Quarterback Mike Evans Jr. completed 14 of 22 passes for 303 yards and four touchdowns, according to Wesleyan’s official box score. He did not throw an interception.
Amari Colon-Brown caught four passes for 149 yards and three touchdowns. He and Evans connected on scoring plays of 52, 32 and 26 yards.
Post scored first, but Evans tied the game with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Tariq Meredith in the second quarter. His 52-yard completion to Colon-Brown gave Wesleyan a 14-7 halftime lead.
Evans found Colon-Brown again early in the third quarter to extend the advantage to 21-7. Post answered with a touchdown, but the Bobcats added a field goal before Evans and Colon-Brown completed their third scoring connection with 1:48 remaining.
Wesleyan finished with 421 total yards, including 303 passing and 118 rushing. The Bobcats recorded 22 first downs and averaged 6.3 yards per play.
The defense forced five turnovers, intercepting Post quarterback Tyler Phommachanh four times and recovering one fumble. Wesleyan also recorded three sacks and limited Post to 225 total yards. Kameron Reynolds and Ayden Smith each had two interceptions for the Bobcats.
Saturday’s opener marked Kellar’s first game at West Virginia Wesleyan, but not his first game as a college head coach. He previously led programs at Concord, California University of Pennsylvania and Lenoir-Rhyne before spending seven seasons as Glenville State’s head coach. Kellar compiled a 36-32 record with the Pioneers.
West Virginia Wesleyan will return to action at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, against Clarion University in Clarion, Pennsylvania. The team’s full 2026 schedule and additional program information are available through West Virginia Wesleyan Athletics.
