Lincoln High Girls Capture Class AA Champions Cup After Standout Year Across Six Sports
SHINNSTON, W.Va. — A state championship, multiple state runner-up finishes and success across nearly every season helped Lincoln High School earn recognition as the top overall girls athletic program in Class AA for the 2025-26 school year.
Lincoln has been awarded The Health Plan Champions Cup after finishing first in the statewide Class AA girls standings with 684 points, according to the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission.
The Cougars finished nearly 200 points ahead of second-place Williamstown, which totaled 486.5 points. Logan finished third with 395, followed by James Monroe with 393 and Oak Glen with 392.
Lincoln’s championship was built on success across six different girls sports.
The Cougars captured the Class AA state championship in cheerleading and finished as state runner-up in both girls soccer and track and field. Lincoln also placed third in cross country, advanced to the state quarterfinals in girls basketball and reached the regional final in softball.
Lincoln had positioned itself for the award early in the school year. Following the fall championships, the Cougars already led the Class AA girls standings with 397 points behind the cheerleading championship, soccer runner-up finish and third-place cross country performance.
The Champions Cup is designed to recognize the strongest overall boys and girls athletic programs in each of West Virginia’s four classifications rather than the success of a single team. Schools earn points based on performances in state championship competition, with additional points tied to the previous year’s graduation rate.
The WVSSAC formally presented the trophy to Lincoln during a home football game in Shinnston. Principal David Decker and Athletic Director Holly Hawkins accepted the award on behalf of the school.
For Lincoln, the honor caps a 2025-26 school year in which Cougar girls teams competed for championships from the opening weeks of the fall season through the final events of the spring.
Frankfort High School won the Class AA Champions Cup on the boys side with 783 points.
