West Virginia Tax Free Weekend Returns for Back to School Shoppers
BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — Families preparing for the upcoming school year will soon have four days to save on clothing, school supplies, computers and other eligible purchases during West Virginia’s annual sales tax holiday.
The 2026 Tax Free Weekend begins at 12 a.m. Friday, July 31, and continues through 11:59 p.m. Monday, Aug. 3. Qualifying purchases made during the four day period will be exempt from sales and use tax.
The holiday applies to qualifying purchases made at retailers throughout Harrison County and across West Virginia. The Meadowbrook Mall is among the local shopping destinations promoting the weekend as stores prepare for one of the busiest shopping periods leading into the new school year.
Qualifying purchases include certain clothing priced at $125 or less, school supplies priced at $50 or less, school instructional materials priced at $20 or less, laptop and tablet computers priced at $500 or less and certain sports equipment priced at $150 or less.
For families completing their school shopping, the weekend provides an opportunity to save on many common purchases, including shirts, pants, shoes, backpacks, notebooks, binders, calculators, pencils and other classroom essentials.
College students and their families may also benefit from the holiday when purchasing qualifying clothing, supplies, laptops and tablets.
The tax free weekend comes as retailers roll out their annual school shopping promotions. Families may be able to combine the tax exemption with sales and discounts offered by individual stores, providing additional savings before students return to the classroom.
West Virginia’s sales tax holiday is held each year beginning on the Friday before the first Sunday in August and continuing through the following Monday. A complete list of qualifying purchases is available through the West Virginia Tax Division.
