Portion of U.S. 119 Dedicated in Memory of Fallen Trooper Cory Maynard
MINGO COUNTY, W.Va. — A six-mile portion of U.S. Route 119 has been officially dedicated in memory of West Virginia State Police Sergeant Cory S. Maynard, who was killed in the line of duty in June 2023.
Maynard’s family, friends, fellow law enforcement officers and members of the community gathered Wednesday, July 22, for the dedication of the Sergeant Cory S. Maynard Memorial Road. The ceremony was held on what would have been Maynard’s 41st birthday.
The West Virginia State Police said Maynard was remembered during the gathering for his kindness, generosity, unwavering dedication and commitment to helping others. The agency said his legacy of service and sacrifice will continue to inspire those who wear the badge and the communities they serve.
The memorial designation covers U.S. 119 from mile point 27.5 to mile point 33.5 in Mingo County. The designation was included in Senate Concurrent Resolution 1, which was adopted by the West Virginia Senate on Jan. 28 and by the House of Delegates on Jan. 29.
Maynard was fatally shot June 2, 2023, while responding to a shooting call in the Beech Creek area of Mingo County. He had served with the West Virginia State Police for more than 15 years and was survived by his wife and two children.
During his career, Maynard was named the West Virginia State Police’s statewide Trooper of the Year in 2012 and received a Lifesaving Award in 2015.
The dedication follows the recent conclusion of the criminal case surrounding Maynard’s death. Timothy Kennedy was convicted in May of first-degree murder, first-degree robbery, disarming a law enforcement officer and two counts of attempted first-degree murder.
Kennedy was sentenced July 7 to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder conviction. A Mingo County judge also imposed additional consecutive prison sentences for the remaining charges.
The new signs along U.S. 119 provide a permanent tribute to Maynard’s life and ensure that travelers passing through Mingo County will continue to see the name of a trooper who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving the people of West Virginia.
