National Obstacle Race Series Returns to the Mountains of West Virginia
One of the nation’s premier obstacle course racing events is set to return to West Virginia later this summer as the Spartan Trifecta Weekend takes place August 29 and 30 at Summit Bechtel Reserve near the New River Gorge.
The annual event draws competitors from across the United States to southern West Virginia, where runners will tackle a demanding course known for its rugged terrain, steep elevation changes, and challenging obstacles.
Located in Fayette County, Summit Bechtel Reserve has become a regular stop on the Spartan race circuit and is widely recognized for offering one of the most physically demanding courses in the country. Participants navigate miles of wooded trails, rocky climbs, suspension bridges, and mountain terrain while completing a variety of strength and endurance challenges.

The event also serves as a tourism draw for the Mountain State, bringing athletes and spectators to the region during the late summer season. Many visitors take advantage of nearby outdoor recreation opportunities, including hiking, rafting, and sightseeing in and around the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve.
Spartan organizers offer multiple race formats throughout the weekend, allowing participants to compete at varying skill levels. Athletes seeking to complete a Spartan Trifecta can earn the distinction by finishing three different race distances.
The return of the event continues West Virginia’s growing reputation as a destination for outdoor adventure sports and endurance competitions, with the state’s mountains and natural landscape providing a unique backdrop for participants from across the country.
Registration remains open through Spartan Race.
