$5 Million Secured For Five Clarksburg Bridges As Major Road Work Continues Across City
CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — Five city-owned bridges in Clarksburg are slated for reconstruction or rehabilitation with the help of $5 million in newly secured federal funding, adding another significant infrastructure investment as major road and bridge work continues across the city.
U.S. Rep. Riley Moore presented the $5 million check to Clarksburg officials Wednesday evening during an event at the Fourth Street Bridge.
The funding will support work on the Dublin Bridge, Sixth Street Bridge, Wiant Hollow Bridge, PFC Hotty Herrick Bridge and Fourth Street Bridge.
According to Moore’s office, the funding was awarded to the West Virginia Division of Highways, which will oversee and complete the projects. All five bridges are owned by the City of Clarksburg.
Moore secured the funding through his work on the U.S. House Appropriations Committee.
“Clarksburg’s bridges are critical pieces of infrastructure that connect families, workers, and businesses throughout the community,” Moore said in announcing the funding.
The latest investment comes as Clarksburg is already experiencing a particularly active period of road and bridge construction.
Work is continuing on the Point Comfort Bridge along U.S. 19 and West Pike Street, where a series of weekend closures is scheduled to begin Saturday. The bridge is expected to close from 7 a.m. Saturday through 5 p.m. Sunday for work that includes removal of an expansion dam.
Similar weekend closures are expected during four consecutive weekends, weather permitting.
Another highly visible project continues at the Second Street Bridge over U.S. 50 in downtown Clarksburg.
Construction encountered a setback earlier this summer when crews discovered an elevation difference between portions of the old and new structures. The West Virginia Division of Highways later said engineers developed a solution and expected the delay to remain relatively minor.
Bridge deck work has been targeted for September, with completion of the project anticipated this fall.
Crews have continued advancing the project in recent weeks, including work that required temporary traffic restrictions along U.S. 50.
Another major investment is also coming to U.S. 50 between Clarksburg and Bridgeport.
The Division of Highways awarded Bear Contracting LLC a $9.78 million contract in August to improve approximately 4.5 miles of U.S. 50 from the U.S. 19 junction in Clarksburg to Interstate 79 near Bridgeport.
The project includes milling and paving along with guardrail improvements, drainage construction and drainage repairs.
Together, the projects represent tens of millions of dollars in transportation improvements either underway or moving forward in and around Clarksburg.
The work touches several of the primary routes residents use to enter downtown, travel through the city and connect with Interstate 79, while the newly announced $5 million expands that investment to five additional city-owned bridges.
