The Progressive Women’s Association will host their annual Celebrate America awards luncheon at noon, Friday, June 1 at the Uptown Event Center. This luncheon honors ten All-American Women of Distinction, giving much-deserved recognition to each for their invaluable contributions to our community and beyond. That these remarkable women come from diverse backgrounds and cultures highlights what makes America beautiful - that each of us can contribute to our individual strengths and the resulting benefits create an even greater, more harmonious society.

A woman who exemplifies overcoming adversity and selfless giving is a most apropos highlight for this luncheon. Thus, PWA President Rosalyn Queen Alonso is pleased to announce that Dr. Mirta Martin, current president of Fairmont State University, will serve as keynote speaker for the event.

When she was only six years old, Mirta, her sister, and their grandmother were forced out of Cuba by Fidel Castro’s Communist regime. In a heart-wrenching departure and separation from her parents, two brothers, and remaining family, they fled to a convent in Spain.

Later, in Mirta’s teen years, the trio immigrated to the United States. Mirta Martin worked diligently in her education. She graduated from Duke University, University of Richmond, and earned a doctorate from Virginia Commonwealth University. She began her career with ten years in the banking industry, even serving as Senior Vice President of First Union National Bank of Virginia.

Dr. Martin has since held esteemed positions at several academic institutions. As former president of Fort Hays State University in Kansas, she was the first female president in the university's history, and the first Hispanic president in the Regents system. Dr. Martin was also recipient of the Presidential Volunteer Service Award, which is given by the President of the United States.

Dr. Mirta Martin is renowned for being a savvy business woman and an outstanding, hands-on leader who empowers those around her. As an educator, Dr. Martin is passionate about cultivating growth in all learners. She cares deeply about her students’ successes and is driven by the success of others more so than by building her own portfolio of accomplishments. Dr. Martin is described as dynamic, innovative, having the tenacity to get things done, and is always looking forward.

This luncheon, which is open to the public, promises to be an inspiring event. Seating is limited; secure your $10 reservation by calling PWA Executive Director, Elinda Carson, at 304-624-6881 by May 28. ###
